Moving beyond bare names and dates, we look at family history, architectural, and social history, e.g., birthplaces, residences, occupations and workplaces, migration patterns, and the like to provide with a much fuller expression of what your family’s history encompassed. We not only report where your ancestors lived, for example, but offer insight as to what it was that brought them there in the first place.
We paint both with a broad brush, setting in general terms what life was like for your ancestors where they lived. We also get as specific as the evidence takes us. We can often times provide information as to exact place of birth, occupations and actual employers, home addresses, cemeteries and where and how people died. Who’s buried in Grant’s Tomb, people have asked in the past? We can usually tell you who, and where, and why.
Based on your particular desires, we utilize multiple databases to extract the most accurate data, and then filter that raw data into something meaningful to you.
Again, we do it in a three-step process but in a somewhat different manner than building your family tree. First, your Initial Consultation will include a discussion of the general historical outlines of what appears to be a primary area of focus with regard to your family tree. We generally will already have a basic outline of the historical context and be ready to discuss avenues to approach a social history component. Of course, we also take into consideration specific details of your family tree and history, and then determine the best way to move forward to get where you want to be.
From there we do an Initial Assessment. We take what you have given us and do some basic research. Here we may suggest, for example, focusing on certain family branches to pursue further, or maybe tracing your lineage back to a certain locale or time in place. We may have questions for you based on what you have supplied. Because every situation is unique, we work with you on an hourly basis. We provide you with an Initial Report and you can decide where to go from there.
The third stage is where the adventure builds and starts to really take shape! This is true family history, where we build out your family tree and transform the raw data into a meaningful report.
